Mortenson construction president duties and responsibilities
M.A. Mortenson Co. CEO Dan Johnson is retiring in December after spending all of his nearly four-decade career with the Golden Valley-based construction and development company.
The company announced Thursday that Johnson’s last day as CEO will be Dec.
31, though he will continue to serve on the company’s board of directors. Taking over for Johnson will be current Mortenson President Derek Cunz, who will begin his new duties on Jan. 1, 2025, according to a press release.

A graduate of North Dakota State University, Johnson steadily rose through the ranks at Mortenson after joining the company in 1986. His roles included estimating, operations, business development and senior leadership, Mortenson said in the release.
The company promoted Johnson to chief operating officer in 2008, president in 2015 and CEO in 2017.
