I could name him as a senator but not Indiana's senators. He was the temperamental opposite of Reagan, who was...well...cool and slick. Simon was uncool, but I know even kids who loved Reagan respected him. He had that preacher's gravitas without seeming like a boring sermonizer.

As I grew older, I respected him more and more for being different without trying to show how different he was, for making sense and being worth listening to. When he retired in 1990 I was disappointed I would never get to vote for him.
