This essay addresses the ‘archive’ as a productive and inspiring factor in the context of architectural design.
As one can observe, for example, in publications and lectures of contemporary architects such as Sauerbruch Hutton, Brandlhuber I Kniess, Valerio Olgiati, John Pawson or EM2N, various archival activities create initiating impulses for the genesis of foundational concepts of architectural design, for project-oriented design actions and finally for the stabilization of attitude and profile.
The term ‘archive’ first of all reminds one of the passed, of the previous and especially of an institution that collects, registers, categorizes, and seems to be very far away from innovative, creative thinking.
